Travel Vlog 5: A strange temple in Chiang Mai

This is Wat Umong temple in Chiang Mai, in the middle of a forest nearby Chiang Mai university. It's a 700 year old temple, and with fewer tourists than roosters it stands out as a different kind of temple than the others. First of all, when you enter the temple grounds, you're greeted with signposts on the trees with messages and proverbs like "100 years from now all new people" and "Love is an easy word but understanding is difficult". Then once you enter the grounds, there are chickens and roosters with babies chirping, dogs sleeping next to Buddha statues, and monks in bright orange gowns reading the newspaper. Walking a little further, you can see a huge lake where you pay 10 Baht to buy a bucket of bread to feed the giant catfish who live there. You can also buy bird food to feed the pigeons who occupy the whole little island in the lake. The man who sells you the bread and bird seed passes the time by catching pigeons and trying to get them to eat rice out of his hand. While I was there, I saw him catch two different pigeons and hold them in his hands. Then there is the stupa, covered with fabric which looks burnt. Below the stupa are the tunnels (from where this video is filmed). Exploring the tunnels takes you to different Buddha statues and you can also see paintings on the walls of the tunnels from the 14th century. Out of the tunnels, there are crumbling Buddhist statues lined up along with plastic elephant toys and even a plastic unicorn. It seems like an odd collection to make up a prayer station, but it all works together with the mood of the temple. There is also a zoo in the temple which I tried to explore, but I didn't see any animals there. While leaving the temple, I felt kind of like I was returning from temporary stay on a different planet. I'd highly recommend you visit this temple if you're in Chiang Mai, since it's so different than the other temples around the city. Thank you for watching!
