Kyungnam EPIC also slashing GETs

Had my CT call GOE office in Chungnam and they mentioned the removal of GTs from the province starting in September.

My guess is that they will follow suit the same as Seoul, starting with high schools and middle schools.

Anyone in the know about this?

Is it possible that this is due in some part as a reaction to the mbc racist proganda . I do think its a good bet the number of native teachers being brought for public schools willl be reduced  but just one mans opinion   what do you think ?

I don't think it has anything to do with the MBC broadcast at all. Just cut backs.

Heard a report that native teachers at public schools will be cut 57 percent by the year 2014 . Dont know if thats true . Anyway new president will come to Korea soon so some new policies will be started . The program was doomed from the start since they liked to hire teachers under 30  or at least 40 . Teaching at Public School requires more skill then teaching at a hagwon so needs experience . Oh the photo was important too So hire some young  good looking teacher and think magicly he or she can teach 30 students without experience or much training .    Not going to happen my friend . Teaching at a hangwon is black and white . If students like you and keep coming  owner will like you too . Since a public school does not get money who is a good teacher may depend on politics at the school . A good teacher may not depend on teaching skill at all . But on how he or she gets along with the Principal or other teachers in power .

You are making several generalisations robert.

1) Teaching at Public school requires more skill, more experience.

2) Young teachers can't teach

3) Teaching at a "hangwon" is black and white.

4) Their policy of hiring young teachers "doomed" the program.

You should try not to project your opinion as fact.

You are entitled to your opinion, however you project it as objective, common knowledge, not your own opinion.

Many hogwans might be as you have stated, but not all. Many hogwans might be the same, but many are also quite different. The same goes for public schools, and the same goes for young teachers.

I too am curious about every one of the acryonyms above. Please help the uninformed become the well-informed.

Thanks.

It’s inevitable and decline in ESL teaching opportunities, here in ROK.

…but, it’s just business, man!!

However, I feel that those that get caught up in the (at times) ‘sycophant’ environment are those that will find it hard to move on. Personally… knowing that I’ve contributed and left a positive impression, as well as ‘The Don’ in the bank, will be my final objectives. ‘Good luck’ with yours. :)

CT - Co-Teacher

GT/GET - Guest Teacher / Guest English Teacher

GOE - (provincial) Office of Education

Seems to me that bringing over enough native teachers to fill every school must be expensive so they want to see a huge improvement for the money spent. Sadly, it is almost impossible for teachers of any ability to improve kids in classes of 30 who they see once a week for 40minutes. Many of the students have no other contact with English and so there is only a little gain from the huge money spent on English teachers. This is not the teachers fault but the systems. They need to invest the money into making smaller classes with more one to one time. A logistical nightmare!

Re: Kyungnam EPIC also slashing GETs

These programs were started under the former President Lee . I think they were started with some time limits , To be continued or not ? The New President Park has started her 5 year term . She has from what her platform was has many programs . Perhaps she will start up her own Education programs too . I wouldn't go by what a Korean co teacher says . Its best to call people yourself to gain information . Nowadays Korean people and the media seem very friendly to westerners . When I was working out at the gym recently   some ladies say hello to me even if I dont know them . Some men say good morning to me too . Taxi   drivers usually give me a thumbs up when they find out my country . As more Koreans have visited America recently I think many of them can discover what America really is . Nowadays Koreans dont need a visa to go USA . I  dont live in a cave so I am sure the North Korean thing has something to do with it . Nowadays as I  mentioned I find Koreans and their media  to be mostly friendly to westerners . So  its a good time to make the relationship between Korea and other countries stronger . As i mentioned before its to early to till if President Park  will make some Education programs . Its also  important  to remember there are more westerners living in Korea these days so there is less need to bring them from overseas  with the extra cost of airplane tickets , bonuses , housing , insurance and pension .
