I have a Galaxy U smartphone from lg wireless, and I want to put music onto it, but my macbook does not recognize it when I plug it in with the USB cable. Is there anything I can do about this?

Try what Droid said it seems he knows what he's talking about. If for whatever reason that doesn't work you might want to try Samsungs own PC manager program called KIES. Here is a link to the English page, although the download link is in Korean but pretty straightforward

Unfortunately, this being Korea, it's only designed to work with Windows. I know Mac has a way to run Windows without a dual boot, but no idea how to do it. There is also a program called virtualbox that can run Windows virtually. I use it on Linux and it comes in damn handy for all of those pain in the ass Korean programs and sites that are Windows compatible only.

If it still doesn't work you could just pop the SD card out and put it directly into your mac.
