This is a rare focus on dictators for this blog, one which I hope I won’t have to continue next year. Gavin Atkins reminds us, Kim Jong-il is 70 years old today.

It’s a shame in some ways that Kim Jong il, who is supposed to be 70-years-old today, is such a ridiculous looking bastard because it tends to hide the not-at-all amusing side of what really goes on in North Korea.

There are few men these days who could honestly say, “the world would be a better place if I had never been born.” Still, I managed to learn three new factoids about the Dear Leader I really wish I didn’t know.

• Kim has his boyhood school blown up.
• Kim hires a staff to inspect his rice, to make sure each piece is the same size.
• Kim makes sure he never gets addicted, or quits an addiction, solo.

So, what do you get the man who could kill and torture any person in North Korea for his birthday?
