Psy is right, Gangnam has style. From glistening towers to trendy bars, Seoul's Gangnam district has cultivated an image of class that rivals places like the Upper East Side and Beverly Hills. Prior to the Korean War, Gangnam was mostly rural in nature with rice paddies and quaint houses dotting the landscape. Today, Gangnam is home to multinational corporations and Korea's most exclusive shopping addresses. However it's not all bright lights and crowding plazas, the tranquil tombs of the Jeoson Dynasty contrast against the hustle and bustle that is Gangnam. Upon exiting Gangnam station, one is greeted with Korea's version of 5th Ave. Flagship stores for companies like Uniqlo line the street. However, to find better deals go to the underground shopping arcade adjacent to the station. For a more intimate shopping experience, head over to either Agpujeong or Sinsa. In both places a mix of chain stores and independent boutiques vie for attention. Central Gangnam is accessible on line 2 and the Shin Bundang line. To visit the royal tombs, take line 2 to Seollung station at exit 8. Both Sinsa and Agpujeong are located on line 3.
