From the spicy dishes of ddeok boggi and kimchi to the more extreme foods of beondagi and live octopus, Korea truly lives up to its reputation of having unique food. In that same vein, Korea is also home to one of the smelliest foods on the planet. Hongeo is essentially rotten raw skate fish. If that weren't enough to whet your appetite, the cause of the stink is due to concentrated levels of naturally produced ammonia in its flesh. If raw, rotten, ammonia doused fish is not to your liking, there are plenty of other options at Garak Market. At half a million square meters, there is literally something for all tastes at a lower cost. Aisles upon aisles of fresh produce and seafood sell for typically cheaper than at the grocery store. Currently Garak is positioning itself to be one of the largest eco-friendly markets in Asia by 2018. As with many places in Seoul, this market does not sleep. Throngs of shoppers scour through the market literally 24 hours a day. To reach Garak Market, take the orange line (line 3) or the pink line (line 8) and exit at Garak station.
