30 seconds of Myeong Dong

Obviously, there are many, many places made for shopping in Seoul, but Myeondong -- literally "bright town" -- is like none other. It is a massive, open-air shopping mall offering the best of everything. And if you are lucky enough to be here during the holiday season, the light show is simply spectacular. On of the best experiences available in Korea is walking through this area in the falling snow, and stopping to marvel at the elaborate light displays arranged outside Lotte Department Store, which also houses a nifty duty-free shop for those of you with an airline boarding pass. It's a little bit of American-style Xmas consumerism, nestled in the heart of a culture that normally doesn't blink twice at the passing of December 25th. The nostalgia washes over you like a wave. Year-round, it is a wonderful site to see, and a great place to explore, full of the latest fashions and styles to fit every taste. This mile-wide mall is home to 3,500 residents and boasts over 2 million shoppers a day! Central to the best places in Seoul, it is located on the Green Line, the central circle of the Seoul subway, and walking distance to such other great locations as Gwangwhamun, the Chongecheon, Insadong and Seoul Tower. In the words of the Grateful Dead, "Get out of the door and light out and look around!"
