Introduction
Successor to the Seoul Book Fair launched in 1954, the Seoul International Book Fair premiered in 1995. The event is held annually in the spring by the Korea Publishers Association in order to promote Korean publications abroad, to strengthen the competitiveness of the publishing industry, to promote reading among the public, as well as to allow the public to enjoy diverse cultures.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Korea’s liberation in 1995, the book fair has become an international event. In 1996, it was officially recognized by the International Publishers Association (IPA) and became one of the 28 international book fairs in the world.

Event Programs: The Seoul International Book Fair is the only large-scale exhibition held at the COEX that is not only free but also open to the public. However, free admission doesn’t mean that the fair lacks quality. It is actually quite popular drawing over 200,000 visitors as well as receiving extensive media coverage. The book fair has a vast collection of books from around the world on display, as well as offers consultation on copyright and trading, various special exhibits, and other auxiliary events for visitors.
Recently, the book fair featured a ‘Hallyu Special Exhibition’ to target Hallyu tourists as well as exhibits of the original hand-written scripts of twenty late Korean authors including Dong-ju Yun and So-wol Kim, and of twenty living authors such as Park Gyeong-ri and Park Wan-seo. The New Book Design Contest and the Book Art Exhibit are also popular programs.
If you have an interest in books and publishing, visit one of the numerous book seminars where there has recently been much debate on electronic books. There is also a panel session where you can have a chance to meet the authors as well as giveaway prizes.

Major Highlights: At the Book Fair, readers can actually meet and speak with book authors. There is also a picture taking event with your favorite author at certain scheduled times in which the first 100 visitors will be given a personally signed book and a framed souvenir photo of themselves and their favorite author.
