 Aims
The Busan Choral Festival and Competition is intended to bring the choirs from all around the world and Korea together in order to provide an opportunity to compare or collaborate and to know each others and learn from internationally famous conductors and experts. 
The participating choirs will be able to present themselves in several concerts during the festival. This helps the foreign choirs to find the venues in Korea before or after the Festival. The main aim of the Busan Choral Festival and Competition is to be an international venue for choral music as the central theme.

 Competition Category
A1 Mixed voices
A2 Equal voices
B Ethnic (folklore or traditional music, including movement, dance and traditional instruments)
C Popular music (Jazz, Rock, Pop, Modern A cappella, etc.)


 Adjudication 
The jury consists of seven expert adjudicators. The evaluation will be based on the following aspects:
1. Technical performance:
intonation, rhythm, phrasing, accuracy with respect to the written notes, pronunciation
2. Artistic performance:
timing agogics, dynamic flexibility, text-interpretation, accuracy of style, choral sound
The decisions of jury are final and may not be legally challenged. The members of jury are not allowed to reveal details of their evaluation or the content of discussion. A diploma showing the level of achievement and prize would be given to each participating choir.


 Prizes

Each category will be endowed with three prizes. The Korea Choral Institute reserves the right, in consultation with the jury, to share as well as to change the amounts of the prizes.

3rd prize US$  2,000 x 6
Best Conductor US$  1,000

Total Prize Money    US$ 55,000  

In addition, the jury can award special prizes and these will be announced separately. 
The jury can adjust the amount of prize, depending on the situation. 

*note: winner of previous years’ grand prix are ineligible to win grand prix for a three year period. 



 Qualification and conditions
- Minimum age of singers is 16 years-old. 
- Each choir may compete in two categories. 
- A choir should have more than 16 and less than 42 singers (including conductor and accompanist). 
- C choir, especially Modern A cappella should have more than 4 and less than 42 singers.
(The 8 microphones will be provided at its maximum.). 
- One conductor can bring two choir teams.
- The members of the choir must be amateurs, i.e. the majority must not earn their living by singing.
- Choirs from music academies and conservatories are allowed to participate.
- All participating choirs are obliged to present in Busan and participate in the official events during the entire period from November 10 to the 13, 2010. 
With the application, the choir agrees to the rules and conditions, to recordings and broadcasts in sound and television as well as any other sound or visual recordings (and any copies thereof) being made in connection with the competition. Accepting the rules and conditions, the choir surrenders all rights resulting from such recordings by the organizers.


  Program 
The whole program from the beginning of the first piece until the end of the last piece - not just the singing time - must be over than 15 minutes and less than 20 minutes. The performance time will not be interrupted by applause.
The competition performance program should consist at least 50% “A cappella”-works. The other works can be accompanied by piano or by a maximum of 3 obligate percussion instruments.


  Compulsory work 
Within the time limit, each choir in categories A1 & A2 has to perform at least one work in each of the following styles in the original language:
1. Renaissance / early baroque
2. 19th Century (romanticism/impressionism)
3. 20th/21st Century (composed after 1950)
* There is no compulsory work for categories B & C.

The final date for applications is June 30th, 2010.

- Please send the entry fee of US$300 as the name of choir or representative and the commission is the responsibility of participants. Our bank information is as below:

- KCI will refund this deposit when the choir arrives in Busan Metropolitan City. 
We regret that the reimbursement will not be done when any choir cancels their application after admission.


  Admission / Selection 
Application (for competition and/or festival) requires the following documents in English:
1. An application form
2. A brief profile of the choir and the conductor
3. A list of the choir’s repertoire for each category
4. A photo of the choir
5. 8 pieces of the score of the competitive performance
6. A performance CD of the choir (MP3 file of MD is possible) 
7. Special programs may be requested for any choirs participate in Gala Concerts, outdoor performance or exchange concerts.
(One or more concert programs of about 35 minutes each)
- Church concerts or normal concerts
- Traditional concerts: in or out of national costume, and with or without instruments
- Whether or not you play the performance with Korean choirs

Details of admission will be mailed at latest before June 30th, 2010 .


 
Expenses / Accommodation / Transportation / Meals 
The Busan Choral Festival and Competition provides accommodation in single, 
double and triple bed rooms in good standard for 4 nights. 
From dinner on November 10 to the breakfast on November 14 half-board is provided in free of charge. Lunch will be the responsibility of the participants.
A bus for each choir to move will be provided during the period of competition.

The Busan Choral Festival and Competition provides accommodation and meals up to 32 people, the choir which has more than 32 is responsible for the expenses of exceeded people. The exceeded people will be charged US$50 per person a day for accommodation and dinner. The arrangement can be suggested by the organizer.

 
  Registration
The choir can register for :
I . Festival with workshops and concerts
II . Competition

The choir, which would like to take parts in both, has to send the application materials (please see application section). On the basis of this material, the choir may be admitted only to the competition or take part only in the Festival. 
The recommendation to the workshop bases on the application material.

I. FESTIVAL
-PROGRAM
The festival consists of various concerts and workshops. The participants will not only have an opportunity to see others’ performance from the competition but also will be able to experience Korean traditional culture.
-WORKSHOPS
There will be different workshops according to the wishes of the participants and the necessities of musical education. The themes of the workshops will contain both modern and traditional choral music from different regions.
