F2 for 22,000won?

I am very surprised with the Advert I  have seen 3 days ago. This Hagwon in Hwamyeong-dong is looking for a passionate, experienced and talented F2 teacher for 22,000won.

QUESTIONS:

1.) If you are the addressed person living in the same area, are you gonna accept this?

2.) IF you live a distance from this Hagwon, are you going to come for this job knowing the hours can come up with over a hundred thousand won with the same hour rate?

...coz in my opinion, I'd better decline ALL of it. F2 ppeople deserve more than what has been offered. 22,000 won ?? Nah, better give it to the others who are in dire need of a job.

How about you, F2 people out there?

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

i already talked about this job a week ago on the other f2 thread. most times people with f2 visas do not live near the school so have to travel, they do not get housing, airfare, bonus and pension so absolutely, 22 is a joke (someone said it was fair because it was a 40 minute class but still it worked out to only around 25 per hour which is crap) and for that matter, anything under 30 is bad as again, i already posted, people who work at hagwons actually get paid about 25 per hour including the above mentioned goodies that f2 peeps do not get when they work pt.

i am glad more people are on the same boat and think wages are not only bad but getting worse. with the exchange rate and inflation here, we are actually making way less than we did 5 years ago; this even if we were being paid 30 per hour. new people here probably do not know this but say 6 years ago 2mil WON was worth like 2300 Canadian. now it is what, 1774 (as of today)? That is over a 500buck hit. And, for example of inflation, yoghurt used to be 4 for 800WON but now like over 2000. This is the same for all food here. It is not the place it used to be which is why many very good teachers packed up and moved to Malaysia recently. They were offering a car, computer, phone and like 3g a month or something like that.

And as an aside, that school posted again so I guess they found somone for m/w/f and just need tues/thurs now. Brutal. A free afternoon and someone wastes it on making less than 60 bucks. Luckily, I do not work at hagwons anymore, although, I do like to pop in to one now and again as teaching kids can be fun, but I still want people here to make decent money-fair money. Good luck to you all!

If your going to obsess over the job post, Paul.. be sure to have your information correct. The job is for more money then 60 bucks.. Also, please come up with a better analogy describing inflation then the damn yogurt you always talk about.

Windupbird,

Actually, you will be there for 2hours 35 and get paid 66,000 for 3 40 minute classes. A little more than 60 but still same same.

Oh excuse us Windupbird! Sorry to hear that you have already read Paul's examples!

His argument still rings true and maybe he eats 3-4 yogurts per day, so if you cannot contribute to the topic at hand, lay off!

No matter which way you slice it and dice it this is still a shit sandwich. I wonder if people suffering from crappy conditions/pay Stockholm syndrome have self esteem issues? They must for anyone to lower themselves to this. In 1995 I made 25,000w/class in a hogwan. If you are going to work for this you might as well join the peace corps and make nothing for a year because that's what you are worth.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

We must be talking about different jobs, because the job I see paying 22,000 an hour, is from 4 something to 8 something.. No idea how that equals 2 hour 45 minutes.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

Woundup, with the exchange it is under 60bucks (under 59 actually). I am talking dollars-not WON. I said bucks. Bucks means dollars and not WON.

Also, the job was posted before and there was mon, wed, fri as well-230 to 505 which is 2hours and 35 minutes. I even said I talked about this job on the other post and said now they are just looking for tues/thurs as they must have found a teacher to work mon/wed/fri. So 66 000WON for 3 classes-or under 60 bucks with the exchange.

And of course this does not factor in travel time and costs as most people who do pt jobs do not live right beside the school like ft jobs.

So, before you ignorantly go off waytoowoundup, do YOUR homework as saying to me I should get my facts straight is like saying Charlie Sheen is going straight-which is way off the mark! I am dead on baby!  Cheers all. Long live good paying jobs and good luck!

And 22 per hour because while you are at the school you are not making money elsewhere so that counts as time served in my books. I start at 230 and finish at 505 you count this as 2 hours du to class time and not 2 hours and thirty five minues because you are there that long? Your ft hogwans count the 5/10 minute breaks against the hours per month? I do not think so. If I am at a school and not elsewhere, then that counts towards my time. If the school gives me 4 classes then a break then one more class, and I am working part time, that break I get paid for absolutely. Anyone who would deduct that tiem off is robbing themselves.

Oh, regarding yoghurt-this bothers you and not the low paying jobs? How about the bus used to be like 5-800 now it is over 1000-subway to. Diet coke used to be 400 per small can now it is almost 1000WON. What does it matter which example I use? It is all thesame-things here are far more expensive than they used to be... and I love yoghurt...lol

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

...or how 22,000 won for a 40 minute class equals 25,000 an hour.  The math is pretty simple, you divide 22,000 won by 2 and you will see how much you get paid for 20 minutes, then multiply that by the three to find the hourly rate.  I won't put the work here but you can trust me it equals 33,000 an hour.

Another way of looking at it is 6 classes a day for 132,000 won.  If we extrapolate that out to a 20 or 21 day month then works out to be 2.6 million or 2.72 million depending on the month (again you'll have to trust me that the math is correct).  So minus housing, airfare, pension, health insurance and you are looking at about 2.1 a month for a hakkwon job with a pretty nicely blocked schedule and only 4.5-5.5hours a day.

So I stand by my comment that this is not a great job, but it's far from terrible and could be a nice bit of pocket money for someone with the free time who does happen to live by the school.... and if you are interested in the job but you don't live near the school why not ask for a travel allowance? if you really are a great teacher why not ask for a little more money? Why write the school off for offering a 100% average job?

230 to 505 was the job. that is 2 hours and 35 minutes. you count that as 2 hours because that is the amount of time you are in the classroom and not the school itself? really? lol if I am at the school for that long i get paid for that. i get paid for my time served. imagine ft jobs counting up your breaks and making you work extra or take away pay because you are under 120 hours per month. that is crazy. you are at the school you get paid for that time. that is how it works. the idea you are not counting the time between classes as payable time is, well, sorry, nuts in my books.

as for the job being taken, of course it has.  bravo!

A gyopo could possibly take that because F2 visa holders are much more preferred than us. A small- chained hagwon- for 22,000 won.. I'm still not over with this nightmare.

Be cautious, F2ers.. these people are lucky to employ us coz we are ABSOLUTELY legal to work with no other conditions such as housing and the like.

They are taking advantage of that by giving such wages to us.

Goodluck!

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

This ad will be back up in 2weeks time.

Why do I say this? because there is nothing to keep a person doing this job even if it wasn't about money. A person that would take a job like this will certainly, surely and almost immediately realize that they are losing money by not working somewhere else even on a part-time basis.  Like I said you will be back on here in a couple weeks when this gyopo finds something better.  This I can assure you.

I've said it 100times. People don't leave good jobs nor are the best jobs ever put up on ads. They are word of mouth and passed between friends/co-workers.

An F2 for Twenty Two!? Outrageous. If I took that deal I'd have no time to be lounging around the various teahouses of Busan, replying to posts on Koreabridge,  and shamelessly http://aboutteabusan.blogspot.com/ promoting my blog. Besides, as was stated earlier: we have to deal with inflation. Tea prices are going up too!

I saw that ad you were referring. I can't believe that Academy, which is not a small one I guess, is paying for 20,000 per 45minutes (don't forget the 10-15mins of prep work and the like), which would equate to 60mins in total(prep work plus actual teaching time).

I don't know  what's goin on anymore. While all the prices are going up, the teaching salary is going down!

Economic factors, too many Hakwons opening and greed are the main factors for this. Combine this with a work force that has few scruples and this is what happens. Maybe it's time to finish with, or upgrade the E2 visa. Quantity is killing the business, combine this with tight parents and we are all dead meat.F4s, students aren't helping. I'll bet immigration referrals will start to increase, as F2s do.

Please people, stop taking these crap jobs and send a message to these hucksters.

''North American accent speaker preffered for South eastern asian applicants. ''

This doesn't make any sense. Anyone who talks with a  north american accent is called a Canadian or an American.  I think they are wanting to hire a Filipino or another south-eat asian with an F-visa which is perfectly within the visa to do so. That doesn't mean the ministry of education would allow it but when do they ever check.

Yep, they will save some money and in doing so lose students because parents won't pay the same tuition and get a non-native speaker. That's why they send their kids there. Koreans will not learn from someone who is from a 'poorer' country than them or someone who is 'browner'.  These are facts people, I've been dealing with korean mothers for 15years now their attitude hasn't changed at all in fact it's more stern than ever.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

FYI.. Southeast Asians are already allowed to teach English as long as they're qualified and having an F2visa.

A lot of Southeast Asians are highly qualified for a teaching position regardless of their looks though some of them looks like Asians too. But I don't think they would accept it. That offer is just too low and I guess no one would ever take it.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

Sure, as long as they are qualified pertaining to the ministry of educations guidelines. The MOE will not allow south-east asians to work in gov't schools or we wouldn't be having this discussion. I'm sure there are plenty of south-est asians working in hogwans but is that sanctioned by the MOE? Most likely not but they don't have the man power to check or even care about who hogwans hire.

I for one would be pretty angry to work along side foreigners from the Group or 7 and make significantly less doing the same job.

100% they do not get a f2-that is for sure; and even an e2 is doubtful because they are offering a wage from pre 2000-1.7mil.

And it is a long day to0 boot. It is like a 40 hour week.

The vacation is only 5 days to...lol 2 days-4 including weekends???

This must be a joke.  No way someone would pay to post this job.

When I first came to Korea in 2003 I got paid 1.9 million won.  This is an insult for anyone, regardless of visa status.  You work 37.5 hours for 1.8 million won.  That works out to be only 12,000 won per hour.  REALLY???

They want an Asian for the job, no need to be so sensitive about it.It's the way here nowadays, they wont change cos we moan. Mass action is required. I think the management have the option to disallow adverts that may be exploitative. That would send a clear message to all.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

Any F2 holder can legally teach in a hagwon provided they have completed at least 2 years of university. This is the same requirement that applies for Korean citizens to legally teach in a hagwon.

Luckily my wife agrees we should live a bit poorer until rates pick up.  I would rather be with my wife and family than leave home for less than w35,000 a teaching hour not including preparation, or travel.  We can live comfortably off my main job, so I will only do extra work for fair money.  For those hagwon owners who come on here and complain about "spoilt foreigners" can I remind you that you make money off selling the service we provide.  If you don't like the rates don't hire us.  Some hagwon owners should stop ripping off their staff including Korean staff.  A good teacher will make you far more than you pay them.

What a surprise-that lousy job looking for a F2 visa holder is up again. 40 hours a week, and 5 days holidays...lol They did up the pay from 1.6 to 1.7 up to 2.1 but this is still a bad job for someone with a e2 visa. Every school gives 10 days vacation and at least 2.1 to start.

Who in the world with a f2 would do this- Hard to beleive this person has a school and does not even understand the market. I mean really, no vacation, lousy pay and super long days-what a catch. If you work at a university you get 5 months off a year plus more than 2.1mil. You also work like 10-15 hours a week. Get real bud!

I also think the person posting the job is giving a rating of 5/5.  When I gave it a 1/5, the second vote, it already had a rating of 5 out of 5.

They also did the same for the first job they put up.  Everyone had rated it a one out of five, but they came along and gave it a 5 and pulled up the average rating.

So first they offer a bad deal, and then they try to manipulate the rating of the job.  Nice work!!!

That's a good idea but we shouldn't have to do this. They won't respond or care, that's how hucksters operate. The star ranking system is flawed as one member has pointed out. It can be manipulated by one or two people as most people don't vote. This and every single post in the future pertaining to employment could all be cleared up today FOREVER! if comments on job posts were allowed. This should be a no brainer to a website aiding/assisting the foreign community.

Please allow comments and in doing so stop these mountebanks dead in their tracks of exploiting foreigners in Korea. Allow us to comment even for a trial period and watch these charlatans cockroach to whatever hole they came from. Let them post unchallenged crap no more.

Thank you.

  1. Don't you comment here anyway? I do not believe you have the right to comment on job ads directly- no brainer. It's up to the manager.

what a surprise-angel disagrees. have you ever agreed with the masses? next you will be arguing against getting paid more. you did mention let the buyer beware but isnt that what we want to do-let people be aware that this job sucks!

and of course they can post this job but we should be able to comment on it. the whole idea i can't post something without it being commented on but people who place jobs get a free pass smells of a sell out. it but this site needs that cash so the hagwons and their money comes before us. it is all about the money-not bros before hogwans. what can you do?

at least no one took that job. but thinking of these people trying to get a f2 visa holder (or anyone for that matter)does make my skin crawl. sucks sitting back and watching people, fellow expats, getting taken advantage in a foreign country and your hands are tied. i would be happier if we were able to give guidance to those who may not know better but the jobs posted here are off limits so here we are on this thread doing what we can-minus angel...lol cheers.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

I mentioned before the worst jobs are those posted by foreigners. Here is one.

Where: Gaegum SLP (near Seomyeon)

When: Friday, April 22; Friday, April 29; Friday, May 6 and Monday, May 9

Working hours: 2:00pm - 9:10pm

Pay: 100,000w per day.

7 hours for 100 a day??? That is like 15 bucks an hour-not even! So this person is going to work for your apartment, pension, airfare, bonus and so on. So sick. This person has taken the 4 fridays off and is offering this to the person who helps her out. So sick! You make more than that per day my friend-much more! All the above is part of your pay and should be included in your pay.

salary-2.2 I would think or better but let us say 2.2

Housing 350/400 a month (il factor in the 350)

Airfare-150 000 a month on average

Bonus-180 000 or better but...

All together it is about 2.9 mil a month. Divide that by the 20 like you did 2mil and got 100 a day and that is 144 000 per day you make. But you want someone to work for 50% less than you make. Nice! Be angry, say whatever, but paying someone 100 000WON (88 bucks) so you can take off is hardly cool.

Here here!

From what I understand the site gets revenue from job posts. It would seem to be difficult to then turn around and allow direct criticism of those posts however blattantly hucksterish. I get it, but then you can't turn around and say how this is a venue of a 'bridge' is to help, aid and assist foreign residents in korea when you allow such a practice. You can't have it both ways. This actually effects peoples livelyhood and well being. I don't know of anything more important on this site.

Why not incorporate a pull down window where the minimum pull down window is 30,000w/hour and goes up in increasements of 5,000. Therefore the evil players in this discount trade have no other option unless to plead there case in the subject window pronoucing to all why they can't pay the mimimum, therefore exposing themselves for the scamster pimps they are.

a few thoughts from the [email protected] desk

The reasoning behind the decision to disable job ads still stands - see original post here, a prior warning here, a follow up here, and a related comment here

- As I recall, comments by LBS and Paul played a significant factor in disabling the job ad comments.  Basically, anytime someone posted a job ad for less than W25,000/hr, this same discussion would happen on each ad, usually with a pretty aggressive harassing tone. please see original post

- I believe in the free market.  If someone tries to sell a used kettle for W1,000,000 , no one will buy it because that price is above fair market value.  If someone posts a job ad for less than fair market value, no one will take it. What is 'fair market value'?  The market determines that, not website managers.

- I believe in providing users with as much relevant information as possible. On the left side column of every job ad are links to a variety of job related resources along with encouragement for everyone to do their research.  If anyone has other resources to recommend, let me know.

- I have NEVER had anyone come up to me or contact me and say "Damn Koreabridge!  I saw a job advertised for less than W25,000/hour and took it without realizing that was less than I should be earning."  There are no degrees of 'never', but if there were, that would especially apply to an F-2 visa holders.

- I HAVE had more than a few people come up to me and say, "Yeah, I don't really visit the KB forums anymore' All those guys complaining about job offers and stuff really turns me off. Why don't you ban them?"  To which I reply, "I believe in a free exchange of opinions (even unpopular ones) as long as people are civil".  Honestly though, some days I think I should change my answer.

- As mentioned in previous discussions on this topic, Koreabridge DOES NOT charge for job ads.   We do want to increase our site traffic and our usefulness to visitors. and job ads play a role in that, but we stopped charging for job ads in 2008 because people complained there were fewer job ads.  I suspect enabling job ad comments (especially the kind that were posted during the first attempt) would have much the same effect, not to mention to the managerial headache of moderating those comments.  The biggest challenge with job ads these days is that some advertisers post the same ads nearly everyday which dilutes the usefulness of the job ads.   Our policies ask advertisers not to post the same ad more than once every two weeks and I've been following up on that with individual advertisers.  Still, we may impose a posting frequency limit and we may start charging for job ads in the foreseeable future to deal with this and yes, to generate some revenue.

Speaking of which, I realize it's tempting to accuse 'the man' of selling out and choosing 'hogwans before bros', but please realize that for 13+ years (geez, I'm old) this 'man' has been doing his best to make this a useful site for the community and while many of you are out there earning W40,000+/hr on jobs (sometimes found for free on this site),  I've been sitting behind this machine earning less than W2,000/hr managing this site - no I'm not exaggerating and yes, Koreabridge really does need to get a bit more serious about making money.  No complaints - I choose to spend my time the way I do, but for those who choose to spend time beating this drum about Koreabridge determining fair market value of job offers, that drum is going to be here in the forums, not on job ad comments.

Re: F2 for 22,000won?

That's fare, it is your site and you can do with it as you will. I believe in the free market as well but there is a big difference between pawning off a cordless toaster and extorting naive greenhorns or people down on their luck forced to become a scab.

The most vicious discussions I've read on here are in the used computer/appliance/electronics market on this site. Those I think allow for comments. They make what Paul and myself say on job posts look like a latter-day-saints commercial.

Thank you for your well written post, good night.

"extorting naive greenhorns"? in another forum you were extolling the fact that F2s have (what is the regular line) years in the trenches. If they do, don't they also have the nous to figure out that thejob offer is below what they should be paid?

What's that got to do with the price of eggs? Non sequacious.
