Foreigner Suicide in Millak

was wondering if anyone has been able to find an english news article about this. read it on the front page of naver on sunday, but can't find any info in english about what happened. allegedly, a man in millak-dong jumped from his apartment building after being arrested days before after a disturbance at gimhae airport. very sad news. if anyone finds an english article....could you post up the link?

I've only heard translated reports from the Korean press, but there seems to be a fair bit of speculation based on things which could be irrelevant. For example, there were empty soju bottles found in his apartment, so there are people suggesting he might have been an alcoholic. In reality, those could have had other legitimate uses like removing paint or cleaning blocked drains.


But seriously, this is really sad news. There are a lot of Westerners here put under pressure without the support network that they might can rely upon back home. It's a pity that admitting any kind of mental illness is so stigmatised here and has essentially been made illegal with the introduction the health declaration for E2 Visa applications. Regardless, can anyone suggest a reputable and confidential counseling service for anyone going through a rough patch?

I also tried to find more about it as well. I'd like to know more. I was told about it, but never saw the article. I checked on The Korea Times and The Korean Herald, but I didn't see ANYTHING about it. All I saw was about the woman with huge breasts who tried to kill herself, but that isnt it.

Just caught the end of the article on Busan e-FM. Apparently he had been been detained at Kimhae airport by the police some days (maybe weeks) previously and was released into the care of someone from his hagwon.

as for the press, well i'm not surprised. helenree hinted at this incident linked in the thread on the chosun ilbo korean site; whilst going off on everyone about the dipstick on the subway and his bum remark.

busanhaps aka bobby mcgill had posted a querry looking for information on facebook, the following day of the incident.

that said  in watching the malay news channels, no news seems to go unoticed with ample anchors in bahasa malayu, english and mandarin or cantonese(s'cuse my unfamiliarity on which is which) from reports of iranians being busted for drugs, indonesian purse snatchers getting mowed down by victim and her car, and politicians under scrutiny for sodomy charges.

its really nice to be in a climate that doesn't cover stuff up or just flat out ignore it.

to all you who remain on the ROK, give this poor busanites story the coverage it deserves, more so than some tool and his terrible pickup line.

lol, personally I'm fine. Although that Seoul counsellor seems a bit dodgy charging 70,000 an hour via webcam. And I'm not sure if I would trust someone who sits in their office wearing low cut uggs and with a suit.

Anyway, I would really like some details to come out so that we know he wasn't either pushed to the limit by an abusive hagwon, or something traumatic happened to him when he was detained by immigration.  I'm sure his hagwon is doing its best to keep everything as quiet as possible, so if he was the only foreign teacher there, we're unlikely to be able to get any info.

Back to the issue of general social support for Westerners, if anyone has a background in counseling they're probably in the best position to volunteer their efforts. That failing, I guess if you're feeling down its a good idea to meet people by joining a club or doing some volunteer work. Unfortunately, foreigner bars seem to provide the main sense of community, but they tend to be brimming with wanton knobheads.

Seriously though, two people apparently committing suicide in one week is a real tragedy, and is an indictment that those of us working in the Mental Health field are not doing our jobs to the best of our abilities. People’s needs are not being met and I am sorry about that. There is definite room for growth.

One note of clarification that I would like to make in regard to counseling is that the first 30 min. of the Assessment Session is free. In addition, there is a sliding scale for those who do not have Full-time employment. Many people have been helped via web-cam counseling on SKYPE, etc. If anyone would want for me to travel to Busan and meet with them on the weekend, that can also be arranged.

But to answer your original question, here is a list of counselors (mostly in the Seoul area.) If any of you could recommend good counselors that are down in Busan, I would be more than happy to add them to my list.

Terrible way to go.

Yes, an anonymous western mindset Busan-based counselor  would help the expat community here as it can get rough for some - culture shock and dealing with uncontrollable kids/chaotic businesses at times.
