Stuff your students have said to you

So I was thinking about writing a new article for my blog based on Korean students and how they react/what they say that we would deem as peculiar behaviour. Please share your experiences here:

Also have a look at my bloghttp://jdbrownlie.wordpress.com/

Thanks

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

In trying to get a discussion going about a reading on drugs...what do you know about drugs? Student: Foreigners do them

'Teacher, do you, have you have intercourse?'

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

What have you said to your students in Korean?  .......oh...wait...you probably don't know how to read Korean.  And even if you did, you wouldn't be able to even miscommunicate what you want to say.

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

You are charming, I was actually quoting somebody else's experience because I found it amusing. Obviously as an English teacher and a red blooded American it's important to sit down and talk openly about sex and drugs to educate children for their future. It's my God given right.

Thank you for your enlightening opinion.

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

Doing a class this week about stereotypes, I introduced it by writing 'Americans are .......... ' on the board and inviting students to complete.

Surprisingly, all their comments were positive, as they were about the Brits. I then rubbed out the Brits and replaced it with 'Japanese'. The comments were unprintable... while they were spewing forth, I subtly wrote 'prejudice' and 'racism' on the board.

Me: What do you think about if someone says the word ''racism'?

Student: White people!

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

That's interesting. They're probably only familiar with the 'stereotype of racism'. Years of Japanese oppression and now living in the shadow of their neighbours seems to have left a bitter taste in their mouths.

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

hey phatt60, are you aware of how many people are instucted NOT to even ATTEMPT to speak korean with their students?  it is quite a large number.  something to keep in mind when considering the dynamics of working in dynamic busan and slamming others, especially when they harbor no apparent or obvious intention to mock their students

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

Stereotype are such because for the most part they are true.

My personal stereotypes; Americans----occupy places they shouldn't belong and are obese. Japanese are still angry about losing WW2 but they build great shit. Koreans try hard but they will never be Japan and can't get along, even with each other. Canadians are nice but clueless and the flag on their backpack makes them a target to every thief and scammer on the planet.  Asians in general; can't drive and all look the same.

My all time favorite  from a Korean student; Chinese are dirty and smell. That takes the cake.

Which of these aren't true, be honest?

Re: Stuff your students have said to you

More than one student said exactly what you did about the Chinese.

Americans are............

Student: White!

Me: Hold on, isn't the President black?

Student: No, he's brown. A black person is too stupid to be President.

The mind boggles....
