Come On!

There is a part time job on here now saying the school offeres 15 000WON per class. Are you kidding me. The guy going on vacation is obviously trying to scam people and keep some of his pay for himself. Really? 15 000? I dont think so. I post this for those who do not know any better and think it is an okay job. You should be getting paid at least 30 per class. If you get caught teaching illegally you pay a fine-like 2mil and get deported. Is that worth making 100bucks (after the excahnge)? Dont take the job. Let that guy pay the price for being so cheap! Absolutely incredible this kind of stuff is goijng on here. My wife makes 30 per class and she is Korean. Can you guys not make more back home? Why come if you are willing to accept such low pay???

Re: Come On!

Please koreabridge, allow us to comment on the jobs board. Or at least put some kind of minimum, that being 30,000w. This is 2010 not 1985.

Re: Come On!

That's pretty depressing.

When I was working shitty restaurant and retail jobs in Australia while I was going to University the minimum wage for an adult was about $14.70 an hour.  These days I think it's around $17.  So this job pays significantly less than a dish pig gets paid back home.  Hopefully nobody here is desperate enough to take it.

Re: Come On!

Just do what i do:

E-mail them saying you studied 5 years getting your DR. In Ed. and say the pay is fantastic blah ..blah...willing to swap jobs at the UNI, criminal record is good...except for back home..have some fun leading them on..!

Re: Come On!

Nice...lol I still dont understand why we can not comment on jobs-other than the fact maybe these people pay put their ad on here so they dont want to hurt their biz but as long as you dont slam the person, personally, I do not see a problem with people reading underneath jobs like that one that it is a ridiculous job and everyone inquiring about it should be getting paid more.  15 000WON? Yikes!!!

Re: Come On!

Jay..commenting was allowed on the 'gyopo 20,000w' thread. I had to blast it, 20k for someone who is bilingual? They are smart enough to know two languages fluently but dumb enough to take a job for 20,000w? no wonder it is vacant. .

As for the other job posts I don't really see that much of pain and most are normal working conditions.  Those require no comment at all but it would be nice to have that option if it is a chronic position that is all ways looking for a teacher.

As for the 15,000w?  it needs to be hung in the town square.

Re: Come On!

it would be nice to have that option if it is a chronic position that is all ways looking for a teacher.

The fact that the position remains vacant is a good indication that all those stupid newbies you're trying to protect by bitching about job postings do not, in fact, exist.  The idea that 15k/hr is too low for part-time work is not some great wisdom that needs to be shared with the masses; it's something that everyone already knows.

Re: Come On!

But it doesn't remain vacant that's my point, It's filled and then filled again and again and again. If everyone all ready knows then why has one poster in particular gotten away with this type of chronic tomfoolery?

Oh by the was crudler, what have you ever done for the foreign community here? Other than blast me for caring and not wanting others to go through what I had to endure in the dark ages of EFL.

Re: Come On!

I am not a teacher (but I am Chinese), generally speaking offers of cheap service are not preventable as long as the market exists...

The fact that Homeplus is selling cheap "made in China" doesn't really hurt Lotte department store...

Re: Come On!

Oh by the was crudler, what have you ever done for the foreign community here?

In addition to offering direct advice to people about how to resolve problems with their employers, passing along job leads and networking, and directly helping several newbies deal with issues of living in a new country, I've also done a lot to promote and support the local music scene and to promote local expat clubs and publications.  I realize this pales in comparison to regularly pissing and moaning about things on a web forum, but I do what I can . . .

Re: Come On!

That is so depressing, could they give a more higher rate than that?

Re: Come On!

Well good for you! I'll continue to piss and moan and save people from the clutches of unsavery cheats where they attack; this forum.

I've taken in many a stray cat(stranded, kicked-out foreigners, won-less) in my tenure here, I've never asked for anything in return. It seems we are more a like than you think.

Re: Come On!

Wow Crudler!  You claim that there is no need to post things like 15bucks an hour is no good as EVERYONE KNOWS it but then claim to be a person who helps others? I love it that some people on here put themselves out there and posts things about lousy paying jobs. It never gets old as Korea is always changing-people come and people leave. Either get on board and help others or dont but dont play devil's advocate just for the sake or wanting to argue. That surely helps no one and EVERYONE KNOWS that. Keep up the good work guys! To death with lousy paying jobs!

Re: Come On!

Thanks Alex, we do what we can. From what I just discovered though....

The new scam is to not even publish the payment but simply tell people to call or email. We have reached a new low EFL/ESL industry people; the point where even the mountebanks are too embarrassed to disclose the renumeration. I guess the new approach is guerilla phone tactics. I never thought we would get to this point. I'm shocked and sickened. Actually no I'm not, nothing in this industry does anymore. I've seen it all.

Re: Come On!

All of these jobs pale in comparison to the job being offered by Busanhaps.

Bi-lingual Korean with a car... 7,000 won an hour.

Fuck me Bobby, are you serious? you should be ashamed to make that public.

Re: Come On!

Actually, 7000 won is not bad for most young Koreans.  The average bar seems to be paying about 3500/hr.  No, you can't live on it, but you can't live on minimum wage in most countries.

Re: Come On!

Working in a bar doesn't require you to use 2 languages or drive around, just to stand in the corner and carry stuff when required.

So, for example, a Korean person with a university degree, who can speak Korean and English and owns a car can get \7,000.

However, a Canadian person with a degree and no teaching experience or teaching qualifications, who can only speak English (might not even do that well) and doesn't own a car can get \30,000-50,000.

I love when tutoring rates come up on here and people start complaining that they should be getting more money. Those people who are complaining are often not qualified or experienced enough to be getting the money they demand.

Re: Come On!

Money they demand? How about demand for foreigner teachers? At anytime there are 1000 jobs to be filled in the EFL industry in Korea. They can't even fill the EPIK positions and that's a safe gov't job where at least you get paid.

Trevor, this place isn't saturated with foreigners like Taiwan, we can get 40-50-60/class. Some people come here and have bad experiences, most simply move on. Check out the for sale ads on this site. There are all ways people leaving and in droves.

The free market dictates the prices, not the foreign teachers. If Korea was a wonderful place to live and people didn't get screwed over by bad agents, hogwans, cheap colleges/universities, roach hotel living conditions et cetera people might actually stay longer than a hockey season.  We would be getting less, all around regular pay and private. As it is now though, nothing has changed in my 15years. The problems people had in 1995 are the same today. Where is my pay?
