What makes a good teacher ?

I was recently asked  to introduce a teacher , I introduced a Korean American , They rejected him since he was Korean , I know that most schools first want to hire a lady , Then it seems they like to hire people based on age , The younger the better , What makes a good teacher ? Seems people are still lost on this matter ,

Re: What makes a good teacher ?

Well, obviously skin colour is very important.  I do think gender and sexual orientation are more important though and maybe fourth on the list would be experience.  Fifth is qualifications - university degrees or the like.  Oh, wait...and hair colour!  Skin and hair colour together: combine those two and that is probably the most important.

Sorry to rant a little.  I am uncertain how your question fits with your anecdote.  You seem to be describing a situation where the best question would be, "What makes a good hagwon manager?"

Finally and in direct response to your question, I think a good teacher sets clear limits.  The class is fun and students know they can ask questions but also understand that politeness and respect are important.  Oh so many years ago, as a beginning hagwon teacher, I was known for fun classes and had made many games for English and our class content.  Unfortuneately, I had some problems maintaining control of the class - there was too much Korean being spoken and I was too much a friend rather than a teacher.

Re: What makes a good teacher ?

I think robertpusan64 isn't far off from the truth. I of course have a degree, I have over 4 years teaching experience, I have an excellent letter of recommendation, and yet I still find it very difficult to find a job. When I go for an interview, I'm told they are very impressed with me. But, I'm over 50, and that is the deal breaker. Hogwons are a business, and the mothers want young teachers. Can they teach? Maybe, maybe not. Do they have experience? Most of the time, no. Are they responsible? Maybe, maybe not. Do they go out partying? Probably. If I was a young blond, with blue eyes, I could get a job anywhere. If you believe it or not, it's the truth. Sad, but the truth. I'm sure there are many hogwon owners who are sorry after a month or so when they realise the young blond can't teach or control a class.

Re: What makes a good teacher ?

ideal:  someone responsible, teachable, fits the legal requirements for work in korea, gets on with children, passionate about education.

reality. someone young, pretty, good for advertising, and follows orders.

Re: What makes a good teacher ?

Ive learned alot as a teacher even it was not enough to be a real good teacher. But one thing ive learned to be a good teacher is to know the needs of the students.

Re: What makes a good teacher ?

It also depends on where  u may teach , Hongwons may more be interested in the bottom line money , So if enough of your students keep signing up you will be viewed as a good teacher , Big schools and Public schools may boil down to politics and who you know and are friendly with .

Great teachers form strong relationships with their students and show that they care about them as people.Great teachers are warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring. Teachers with these qualities are known to stay after school and make themselves available to students and parents who need them. They are involved in school-wide committees and activities, and they demonstrate a commitment to the school.
