Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

Seriously I wouldn’t  work in Daegu ever again. It is a small minded town, and if you think they are xenophobic in Seoul or Pusan it is much worse here as it is in boon dock towns.

I have lived in Seoul and Geyonggido province. I have experienced tensions in the formerly mentioned but it is much worse here. In Seoul or Geyonggido I never had problems if I approached women in café’s restaurants or bus stops etc. Here in Daegu I have had women look at me in utter shock or they have walked away very quickly.

In Seoul or Geyonggi province I met more people, male and female Korean and non Korean very easily. In Daegu it has been quite the opposite. People here in Daegu congregate in clans. In Seoul or Geyonggido it has been the opposite.

In Daegu I am treated like a complete outsider when I am out on my own. In Seoul or Geyonggido it is the opposite. Seoul and Geyonggi-do is more liberal and nobody cares much about what other’s do.

There is more to do for foreigners in Seoul, Geyonggi do or Pusan. Yes they are coveted places and for all the right reasons. Why would you want to live in a city or province of narrow minded peoples who view Westerners as trouble with a capital T?

Daegu is also a big American outpost and if you happen to look like a Westerner you will be labelled American. Thanks to army personnel’s level of intelligence we have them to thank for all the  misdemeanors, social and public display of idiocy, the harassment of Korean and non Korean women that is beyond the ken. So, average heterosexual men are lumped in to the same basket because I am a whitey.

Every where I go, if I attempt to strike a conversation with a woman or in some instances even a Korean male I am treated with contempt. As an American female friend said to me, Daegu appears to have a high percentage of latent lesbians. These words are from a woman, I did not fabricate them.

Then if you are an English teacher, Certified, registered, faux or not woe is you. You will be treated equally like army personnel. We are all at the bottom of the social barrel no matter how much you try to impress with knowledge, self acquired or formally acquired.

IMHO Deagu is not the place for foreigners and sometimes I think why does South Korea keep hiring or requesting Western teachers when we are always treated like third rate specimens. Then Korean xenophobic actions and sentiments are well felt by all, it really begs the question, why small cities in South Korea bother to hire Western teachers. The schools, public or private in isolated areas regardless of the rapidity or frequency of public transport are inhabited by myopic peoples. The concept or possibility of getting on a bus or train to go to Seoul or Pusan every weekend is a ludicrous and expensive endeavour.

So when people say ‘I do not want to work in small towns or cities smaller than Seoul or Pusan’ who can blame them? Korea is not internationalised like it claims it is. Internationalisation means multiculturalism in all its facets. Meaning, with all the difficulties of a multi ethnic society, internationalism is present and permeates a culture from the doorstep of the airport to the Turkish restaurant in your neighbourhood. Think of Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, London, New York, Chicago and you know what I mean. (In a nutshell)

Cities like Daegu, Masan and Daejon are hick towns not used to foreigners, if they were why do they keep treating us like outsiders? Remember Korea you invited us here. Have some respect for us too.

I'm not buying this. Something in this post--whether it be the clunky syntax, outdated phraseology ("trouble with a capital T." Who say's that?), and repitition--reeks of an imposter. I think this is written by a non-native trying to see if they're good enough to get one by the Koreabridge Intellegensia.

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

I have been to Seoul , Inchoen , Suwon , Osan , Songtan , Pyoungteak , Ilsan , Panmunjun , Yongin , Taejon , Choengju , Chochiwon , Busan , Kimhae , Yangsan , Gojay Island , Ulsan , Jeju Island , and others I have forgotten . I have been to Deagu  too . I found the people in Daegu no different then other parts of Korea. Some Good , some soso Some bad , Same as America Some American are good , some bad , and some so so   All countries and people are the same . . People are people . Race is just like clothing .  Perhaps do you have a short haircut . Maybe thats why somebody things you are Army .   I wouldnt like to live in Daegu because its oven hot in summer and freezer cold in winter . Also there is no beach there . Best places in Korea are Busan and Jeju . Thats just my opinion .

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

It's not a waste of time to read such story, but i think Daegu is really kind to westerners than to Asians, and yes i admit that i am one. Back at home I work as a professor and i have my masters degree but it is such a waste because i've been advice and put down countless of times that i am not allowed to teach because i am not a western or what you can call a native speaker and people like me were only allowed to work at factories,or clubs wasn't it great???? well it is much worse when they tell it to your face and you will see a written signs that my kind are not allowed to apply for a teaching job even for a part time, atleast the people in here i mean in this site did not experienced it yet but honestly i did. And Know what, My exchange language friend told me not to speak korean anymore especially if it is not fluent because a lot of people in daegu really belittle my kind, that I should start speaking back into English again and with accent so those people will shy away and won't look at me the way i was always treated because i am a "Filipino", alot of people were really narrow minded but what i really want others to know is that to never judge a person based on his race, but right now since im still living here i always remind myself that LIFE IS UNFAIR SO I HAVE TO GET USE TO IT.

Please go back to where ever you came from, now... do not thank the brave men and women who are serving here, many on their first post in a place where they are under a huge amount of scrutiny...

JUST LEAVE NOW!!!

Seems to me this person thinks very highly of himself, it is actually sad that he has spelled out how bad he has struck out~

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

I think your post is unhelpful to us. I mean, the labelling of Korean females as latent lesbians here, to do so in print here, is upsetting. I'm married to one. I can appreciate where you are coming from, that "you" feel isolation, but are your expectations too high? If you are going to complain, avoid stereotyping everyone there, drop the unwanted labels.

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

Whatever anyone including you or some young Koreans think without the US Army in Korea .There would be no South Korea it would be Korea but under the control of the North government . The nice houses would be taken over by the North people men would be sent to prison camps or worse . Women would be taken for north men as wives . Study the history of Vietnam after the American and other armies left in 1975 and you can see what a bleak place it would have been and still would be .Thanks USA army for your brave service . Thanks .Yes some army members do some bad things . But some non amry people do bad things in Korea too . And some Koreans do bad things in Korea too and some do bad things in other countries too . People are people . Some good . Some bad . Some so so . Race is just clothing . This is the year 2012 . Wake up .

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

Daegu is just a great place to live in. I've approached women and it's been 50/50 on success just like anywhere else and apart from that I have been approached by Korean women in Daegu several times as well ...so, I just think you're not used to the Gyeongbuk style..the more conservative way of Korea which isn't Boondock style but rather authentic Korean style unlike watered-down Seoul style~ can't speak of Busan as I yet have to live there but I spent enough time in Seoul and Daegu and the area to know Gyeongsando is far better than Seoul unless you're a closed minded idiot who only prefers Seoul because it's 'multicultural' by which in fact you mean you have less to adapt to..and haven't really come over here to appreciate Korea for what it really is!;)

Re: Don't work In Daegu if you like your freedom

Sounds like you have a bad attitude.

As for your comment:
"Thanks to army personnel’s level of intelligence we have them to thank for all the  misdemeanors, social and public display of idiocy, the harassment of Korean and non Korean women that is beyond the ken."

That's an over generalized blanket statement.

I am part of that "Army Personnel" and have a Master's Degree in Computer Science, speak, read and write 4 languages, and I am a member of Mensa International........ the list goes on....

I you would like to compare intelligence let me know.

As for your comment:

"Every where I go, if I attempt to strike a conversation with a woman or in some instances even a Korean male I am treated with contempt."

Maybe the women you are approaching can smell the desperation you must be exuding in your cheesy pick up lines and run away in fear. Sounds like you are a LBH (Losers Back Home) and have "Yellow Fever". If it sucks here soooo bad why don't you jump on the first thing smoking and get out of here.
