Typhoons in Korea

The typhoon is way off shore and is going to be a category 1 when it nears Mokpo. Everytime a typhoon comes near here there is mad alerts-like the posting of the news on here-but there is nothing to worry about. Mokpo and the West coast will get some wind and rain but landfall-where the eye of the storm is-will be in North Korea. I understand Koreans like to dramatize everything but the last tiem a typhoon was even near Mokpo people here in Busan could not even go on the beach. Too much! Let's be aware and safe but people facebooking this like we are going to tak a direct hit from a powerful typhoon is way off. Maemi was a category 3 when it hit Busan directly, Bolaven will be a cat-1 with the eye far west off land.

Re: Typhoons in Korea

You are correct but in USA when a hurricane comes people flee and get out of its way and others  board up the windows . In Korea they just put tape on windows in Taiwan they put wood over the windows . The typhoon is far from Busan but typhoons are hard to predict . When i was living in Taiwan a typhoon came and 4 people who lived in my apt 2 from Canada and 2 from Australia went to Hualien to look at the waves . A huge wave came and they got swept away  never to be seen again . Governments try to protect people but making a mountain out of a mole hill like today causes people not to fear typhoons , Look what happened in 2003 When maymay hit Pusan . People went out in the storm . Most people die in typhoons when they get hit by something ,  Today should have been a watch in pusan not a warning . Like they do in USA for tornados . Its 10 am so far Pusan just is alittle windy and rainy .

Re: Typhoons in Korea

People were talking about this storm like all hell was going to break lose. The media needs to be responsible-not cry wolf. You do that enough and people stop listening. I really think people are so bored here they make stuff up just to try to create some excitement. I agree with both of you that you need to be careful but in Korea, picking up on another thread here, something like 15 people die everyday in car accidents but nothing is getting done to make driving here safer. Speed bumps in the country and more cameras is not the solution. So if this happens daily, why close schools in Busan as the typhoon is not even close to here. Just look outside-it is a normal rainy day. So what! People need to learn to be more responsible and stop listening to the media. I am sure people out West had some hardships but hardhips happen all the time. This storm was, forgive the pun, way overblown.

Re: Typhoons in Korea

@Anonymous: To be fair, this storm looked exceptionally gnarly and had it hit Busan full on it would have done tons of damage.  It weakened before it hit Korea and blew in pretty far West, but I don't think that the media was being overly alarmist.  When it was blowing in, it really was the largest storm in 50 years to come this way and guess what, people died in Jeollanam-do yesterday. So to say that the media was "crying wolf" is just ridiculous on your part.  This was a SERIOUS storm; in the end it was much less awful than it could have been, but has it occurred to you that some of this may be because people took it seriously and took some precautions?

Re: Typhoons in Korea

All anyone had to do was check the weather and see that it was sliding way West and was downgraded to a category1 storm. Watch this happen again as Tembin slides into Mokpo. My guess is the media will be saying a typhoon is coming but the winds are only 50 miles per hour sustained. A typhoon needs to have winds at 75 to be considered a typhoon but listen, watch, as the hysteria happens all over again. Tembin is on track for a direct hit but...

As for being prepared, that is a good thing-if a typhoon is actually coming. But it had no chance of hitting Busan. Maemi was a cat-3 storm that hit us here directly. Bolaven was a cat-1 storm that was off the West coast. All I am saying is being responsible is better than causing people to panic. My wife's friend's here actually made the husbands put tape on the window. Why? Becaue the media said a typhoon was coming. That is irresponsible. Bolaven was never coming here.

Re: Typhoons in Korea

Just read were Sanba  is most likely going to make landfall near Busan . I guess sometime  on Monday . So looks like Monday will be a holiday in Busan , I guessed Yosu .  Now its a cat 3 but most likely  it will be cat 1  or trop storm when hits Korea but  a cat 1 or trop storm near cat 1 is no picnic at  the beach . Best to stay inside to avoid being hit by some objects .

Re: Typhoons in Korea

It seems there is a silence of the lambs when it comes to Typhoon Jelawat . It bumbled up near Philippines a few days ago . I haven't been able to get much info about it . At first forcast said it would hit Taiwan but when i read that I thought to myself I never seen a typhoon hit Taiwan in Sept . I think they usually go to Japan or Korea . I think it says it will go near Ohkinowwa Japan . With Chusuk coming I was wondering if it might come to Korea during that or the Wednesday holiday. I guess time will tell .
