Please Post Your Opinion/Give Advice

To My Fellow English Teachers,

I have recently been offered a position by the KSU SLP branch and am doing my research before

blindly accepting.

I have heard horror stories about other SLP branches and was wondering whether or not this particular

branch has the same reputation? I know that it is quite a new branch, however any advice or personal

experience about this company would be much appreciated.

Thank you in Advance!

Re: Please Post Your Opinion/Give Advice

They just opened this year and is owned by the same director as Haeundae SLP. It's one of the worst schools to work for in Korea! I worked at the Haeundae SLP a few years ago and I worked much longer hours than everyone else I met in Busan. Not only that, but they were so disrespectful towards the teachers and easily broke promises they made. Of the 20+ teachers that I worked with, 2 or 3 liked it there for reasons I could never understand but the rest of us hated it there. They overworked us so much and I don't know how I completed a year there? I guess I was naive and afraid.

Maybe you will have better luck but I doubt it!Whatever you decide to do, unlike most people that worked at SLP, you've at least been warned!

Re: Please Post Your Opinion/Give Advice

Please read the Korean Labor act. Repayment of recruiter fees are not legal, nor is the repayment of the flight.

That said, if you want a letter of release you can easily get stuck giving them both of these fees just to get out of the situation. Be careful where you sign on, once you are there, it is for a year...

Also, I cannot remember but 60 days seems far to long. Koreans know that most ESL teachers have no Idea what the law is and will write a contract with anything they want in it.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO TURN A BAD JOB DOWN.

Re: Please Post Your Opinion/Give Advice

Repayment of a recruiting fee is not legal unless it is written in the contract.

The labor board is not going to do anything to help you if the clause is in the contract. You can always run away and go home but if you need a release letter, you have little choice.

Re: Please Post Your Opinion/Give Advice

Nothing is going to be held invalid or 'illegal' if the conditions are worded in the employment agreement and it is made effective by your signature.  Make sure to initial each page and have it notarized.  Take it even further by thumbprinting it so that at least a portion of the print is on each page.

If you take all measures possible at least then you can't be screwed.  If it is on the effective agreement, there is nothing you can do, really.  Negotiate it, if possible.  Usually, there should be a clause about a minimum employment period that must be fulfilled in order to not be liable for airfare and recruiting fees.

Seems like there are enough bad references here to steer clear.  I, myself, am not familiar with the S** institution.

False.

You do not make law by signing a contract. If the contract does not follow the law, it is not going to somehow change the law...

Read the Labor standards act, I have already linked the part in another thread, showing that recruiter fee repayment is illegal...
