I had the pleasure of being a part of the Ulsan Art Fair this past Sunday at the new “Cubic Square” public area in Shinae. I must admit that I felt like I was jumping into to someone else’s project a little bit but I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and friendliness of all those who were a part of the planning and the event itself!

How this all came about and why I felt like I was jumping into something was the fact that I saw a post on Ulsan Online’s facebook page about the event and before my brain could catch up to my fingers they were already typing a quick response to see if photographers were allowed to join. Before too long I had a table and spot at the fair. Then my brain caught up and started wondering what I had just signed up for.

I made up some small 4×6′s to see if they would sell. To be honest, I wasn’t really too sure what to expect. When we arrived we had a table and they set us up with everything we needed. The organizer, Kaye was very helpful.

At first, sales were non-existent. I kept the prices low at the request of the organizer, so that we could generate more sales. I decided to bite the bullet a bit and charge a really low price just to kick things off. At first, there was more curiosity from the media and older people. Then sales started to pick up. Within the first hour, I sold out of the 4×6′s and ran off to get some more.

People were buying buying in multiples of threes which meant that stock moved quite nicely. Had I known that they would sell so well, I would have increased the price a bit more. At any rate we walked with a decent chuck of money in out pocket.

Overall the day was great and I learned a lot. First of all, price. Had I priced a little higher, I am not sure if I would have sold as many photos but I should have priced them a lot closer to what I would normally have charged someone contacting me through my site.

Offering the complete package was important. Including business cards and bags for the photos was key and something that I stumbled a little bit with in regards to the larger prints. However having cards made by MOO was the best! People really loved my new facebook cards and it got to the point that they are almost as popular as my photos. That being said, I have a coupon code for 15% off if anyone wants it.

All in all, it was a great event and I hope that it continues and gets bigger as I feel that Ulsan needs this sort of thing. The way in which the art fair was handled was also key. The organizers kept it very “artsy” and hip without making it look too much like an old shijang with a bunch of halmonies trying to sell you a 10,000 won bug zapper.
