There is a 24-hour Wang Pang Zi a short walk from the Lama Temple. It’s known as the best place to get donkey-meat in Beijing. They serve flaky pastry pockets, stuffed with lightly spiced shreds of donkey meat, known in Chinese as 驴肉火烧 (lǘròu huǒshāo; pronounced ‘loo row hwore shaow’).

The Chinese seem to view donkey-meat as a cure-all for depression, health, virility, etc. I didn’t feel any different after I ate my donkey burger (which wasn’t really a “burger”), but I did think it was pretty yummy. Tastes like beef but less fatty.

We ate the standard mixed lean and fat donkey meat burger (RMB 5, lürou huoshao 驴肉火烧). The other sandwich options were a burger with lean meat only (RMB 6, jingrou huoshao 精肉火烧) and the donkey penis burger (RMB 12, qianrou huoshao 钱肉火烧).
