Seoul Modern Art Show

So Nara and I got gifted some VIP tickets to the Seoul Modern Art Show last month~  Since we love art and YO ACCESS TO VIP ROOM♥ we decided to stop by and check out the show since I am on the hunt for fun Korean Artists to share.

♥ ♥ ENTER! ♥ ♥

Since we decided to go on the last day of the show it was really empty~ which is perfect because crowded art shows are annoying.  The show was very large, and each artist was given a booth to display and decorate as they saw fit. I’m not sure if they paid for the space or they got invited though, since some artists had double booth spaces.  Since this was such a large show with so much work it was quite a variety of subject matter, mediums, and quality to look at.

Koreans love fancy-pants fine art that is often very organic… either in subject matter (landscapes, flowers, etc) or mediums (cottons, woods, dyes, etc). This is not always my personal cup of tea since I am an Illustrator… I am the type of artist that likes more commercially appealing work or literal VS abstract.

Nara and I both have BFA degrees and are artists for a living, but fine art still makes us go “Eh… this thing is $10,000??” sometimes lol!  Like, a sculpture of lace panties with crotch stain made from Jade~ just an example! That aside, Nara and I do actually collect art~ even though we are not allowing any buying while we live in Korea due to space and shipping (>_<;) Just looking today!

I would like to share with you a few of my favorites from the show~

**Sorry I can not list the artist names! I snapped some photos quickly and randomly, so I did not take note + Also Sorry about the glare in some shots~ most artists did not opt for glare-free glass so it was super shiny in the gallery PLUS I only have a cellphone for a camera :(   **

Koreans love butterflies. Seriously! ♥

I MATCH THE ART! HAHA

If I was living here long-term I would have really considered buying these pieces for my home. They are a perfect harmony of my tastes and Korean art aesthetic I think!

These would look amazing in someone’s garden. Forget the Gnomes!

This artist did huge pieces with amazingly tiny details in mother of pearl!

someone always does something with a baby doll. These are really pretty though!

one artist had the most beautiful rose paintings!  I thought it was a photo till I got up close!

I will take one of those giant diamonds please!  Seriously though, that must have been tedious to paint!

The show also had a large area for student work (1st-12th grade) from some Art Hagwons in the area.

this artist made large sculptures out of colored pencils!

hope everyone enjoyed these peeks of the show!  Overall it was a nice afternoon, lots to look at and I enjoy seeing what Koreans like art-wise here for my own research!  Sadly the VIP room was such a disappointment though, I did not even take a pic!! It was a side room roped off with seats and two tables + a few extra pricey pieces on display…. I wanted some free wine and cheese :P   BOO!
