Korean Food USA: Good Fork

Korean Food USA is a new series that showcases Korean and Korean-inspired eateries all around the nation.

Red Hook isn’t the most train-friendly locale, but the Good Fork has hungry New Yorkers lining up at its door. Run by husband and wife chef duo, Ben Schneider and Sohui Kim, the establishment is famous for its unpretentious, Asian-inspired food.

Sohui Kim counts her paternal grandmother’s vegetarian cooking among one of her greatest cooking inspirations, although the menu at Good Fork leans towards those with a more carnivorous appetite. Fan favorites include the homemade pork and chive dumplings, the “steak and eggs” korean-style served with kimchi rice and a fried egg, and crispy shrimp-scallion pancakes. For those with a more traditional palate, there are a slew of other options from an English pea croquette with an Indian touch, to a fish taco made with striped bass.

Dessert is one of the best parts of the Good Fork, and Chef Kim swears by the signature flourless chocolate cake, drizzled with creme anglaise and caramel sauce.

The menu is eclectic, and offers a diversity of ethnic and traditional American dishes, with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients. It’s definitely not your typical Korean fusion restaurant.
