I like to do this teaching activity when it has recently been snowing. There are many ways to go about this activity, but this is usually how I do it:

  1. Start conversation by talking about the snow. Such as, “It’s snowing today. What do you like to do outside in the snow? Build a snowman, have a snowball fight…”
  2. Give each child a piece of white paper. Have them fold their paper in half and trace a hand on each side. You may have to help them with this.
  3. Explain that each finger will be a snowman they can decorate. Go over vocabulary for each finger (i.e. thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky).
  4. Talk about accessories the snowmen can wear.
  5. Talk about feelings that snowmen can have.

Encourage your students to be creative. I enjoy when my students have reindeer or Santa themed fingers for Christmas. The super hero fingers with capes and masks are my favorite.
