Sand sculptures of the Female and Male General of the world (moon?)

The 28th of February was the first full moon since the Lunar New Year and in Korea there are always large festivals held on the beach to welcome the first full moon. Last year I went to Dadaepo with Matt, Aaron, Lisa and Eunwook and it was freezing. This year however was a gorgeous day and not cold at all. I went with Andrew, Marie, SaeWoon and her friend. It was a lot of fun and there were thousands and thousands of people in attendance.

According to tradition, a large structure called Daljip Taeugi (Moon House) is built around 5 stories high and then set on fire. Before the fire, the moon rises up and over the suitably named, Dalmaji Hill. The moon is supposed to look a lot larger when it rises up from the hill. The fire is used to ward off evil spirits for the New Year. Many people also pray to the gods for good fortune. There is also the tradition of throwing your underwear into the fire which gives you extra luck into the New Year. I didn't do that...but there were lots of older women carrying their underwear around! Interesting sight!

PS. I'd also like to say nice job to Canada for bringing home...errr...keeping at home 14 golds at this Olympics. Its been great to watch and hear about everything from back home. Also congrats to all the athletes and America and Germany for the 1 and 2 spot on the medal count. Looking forward to watching the Paralympics (if I can find channels that broadcast them!)
