The Birds

Ulsan has a strange formation of birds or rather “a murder of crows” Thousands of these birds flock to the Taehwa River area most evenings and fill the sky. It is something to see as it is almost ominous to see so many black crows

in the sky. I remember seeing a bunch when I lived in the area before but the other night was insane. The cold weather seems to bring more out and I suspect that it has something to do with a natural feeding ground and the topography of there area as to why they choose to flock to this particular area.

I went there just as the sun was dropping down behind the clouds and it was the perfect time as the crows seemed to flock to the area en masse. As far as the eye could see, there were crows and a few other varieties of birds. They were everywhere!  Mostly they would collect on the surrounding power lines and similar objects to rest and then take off again. You must be mindful of the poop and it can fall out of the sky like rain.

For these shots I got the best results with my 70-200mm at a high ISO. This allowed me to zoom in and really freeze the birds in flight. Wide angles gave a better sense of place but it did show the birds as well as I would have liked. Thus I chose to pick spots farther away and use the telephoto its advantage.
