Gapyeong is a fairly small town surrounded by mountains, there are good hiking and MTB routes, and a ski slope in the surrounding area. Very close to Gapyeong is the famous Nami Island. Gapyeong is a popular place for Koreans to come during the weekends.
You will have the use of a small car if you have an international driving license or wish to exchange your local driving license for a Korean one (this is a huge perk that no school offers). There are a few supermarkets right in front of your apartment.
There is a long distance bus station within a 10 minute walk, and the subway station is about a 10 min walk away. Gapyeong is east of Seoul, close to Gangwon-Do. If you take the express ITX train it takes 45minutes to get to the middle of Seoul.
If you take the normal subway it is close to an hour and a half. Living in Gapyeong is the best of both worlds in Korea. You are surrounded by mountains, rivers, and nature but you are close enough that you can make the trip into Seoul every weekend if you want. The air is definitely much cleaner out here than Seoul. The other benefit is that there is a foreign teacher at our school so you will have people to talk to and help show you around the area.
