Lee & No = HORRIBLE Hostel
Printer-friendly version

I was going to Seoul with a girlfriend for the first time.  We chose this hostel because it got great reviews online and it looked to be a good location.

The bus we took into Seoul was delayed by several hours due to traffic... We called the hostel to let them know we would be arriving late.  They said ok, they understood, no problem.

When we arrived it was near midnight, POURING rain.  We saw a note w/ my name on the door.  First stating that they had split us up (we paid extra to be in a room together).  They also said to punch in a keycode.  Having never been to Korea before, I didn't know what that meant.  I rang the doorbell.

I was greeted by a man yelling at me from the 2nd story, asking rhetorically if we knew English (yes, i just have no idea what a keycode was or what/where to do it).  Even though he knew who we were, and knew we were going to be late, he continued to yell at us telling us he didn't want us there and to leave.  He came down, gave me back the deposit and pushed me out of the door by slamming it in my face.

Midnight, Raining, never been to Korea... I was dumbfounded and amazed... especially after all the great reviews.  DO NOT GO THERE!!!!

Out of interest how much did

Out of interest how much did you pay. Because there are a lot of cheap decent motels in Seoul in really central places.

we paid about 22,000 each.

we paid about 22,000 each.  So it wasn't too bad and breakfast was included.  We wound up staying at a motel anyway, definitely not the nicest one in the world either.  It was just all a disaster.

44 bucks isn't far off what

44 bucks isn't far off what you pay for an ok motel room, if you pick the right area. In fact I've stayed in one that costs 40 and it's pretty darn good. For a bit more you start to get really nice places. Check the reply I gave to this post if you are thinking of going up there again.

I would disagree
"Midnight, Raining, never been to Korea... I was dumbfounded and amazed... especially after all the great reviews. DO NOT GO THERE!!!!" I would greatly disagree with the OP and the above poster. Notice was given to the owner and the owner made arrrangements to honor the request so that the OP would get his room. The fault lies with the OP for not knowing what a keypad was, which is a very common thing since the 70's. So he slept apart for one night, arrangements could be fixed in the morning but it seems that the Op was too beligerent to accomodate the owner. The only crazy I see is the OP.

The owner says 'keycode'

The owner says 'keycode' followed by numbers and one couldn't figure out what it meant?  I'm stupid and I'm truly baffled by this one.

A bit more info would've been

A bit more info would've been nice like " the black box that doesn't have any numbers on it on the building next to this note (not the building the note is attached to)."

Ultimately, there are nicer/more respectable/and professional ways to handle the situation. If I was running a business ... I would've done things a bit differently.

I have absolutely nothing good to say about the hostel, the owners, or the experience.

Of course not but then no one has anything good to say about you either. These things happen and to condemn a person over 1 incident seems to be quite extreme, after all the hostel owner could condemn you for being late.
