Mud Fest 2011

The first weekend of the mud festival in Boryeong.

Destination: A tour of Boryeong (Chungcheongnam-do)

well rounded.

I cannot drink alcohol for a month (don't really want to either, only 4 months left and still so much left to do!) so I have been filling my weekends with plays, festivals, dinners, shopping and sightseeing. Last weekend was the Vagina Monologues, (which I had never seen and it was amazing) and this weekend a friend is starring in Macbeth in Myeongdong so we will spend our Saturday night getting a little culture. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom now so Sunday will be spent outside on Yeoi-do (do=island, this being a small one in the middle of the Han river, connected on the subway line) enjoying the trees and fresh air.. or nuclear fallout from Japan, whatever.

Jinhae's Cherry Blossom Festival

Korea is a country that loves a good festival. These range from the beauty of Jinhae's Cherry Blossom Festival or the dazzling lights of Jinju's Lantern Festival; to the charming cultural ones such as Gwangju's Kimchi Festival or Jindo's Moses Walk; to the downright weird such as Cheongsando's 'Slow Walking Festival'.

Oh, and the epicness that is the Mud Festival.

Top 10 Things to Love About Korea

For those contemplating the leap that is teaching English in South Korea, there's plenty of documentation out there to highlight the big picture draws of the country and the career. You know about the good money, the free accommodation, and the fact you can use South Korea as a launching pad into South East Asia - so here are the ten small pleasures that I've picked as reasons I love being in Korea again.

Boryeong Mud Festival Sauna Accommodations

Well, my search has revealed only one sauna (no jjimjilbang) in the area of Daecheon Beach. Haesu Sauna is very near the main beach entrance but has little information listed anywhere on the internet. From the map, it looks to be a big building but I'm not sure if there are any sleeping rooms available there.
