Nano Galmaegi (나노갈매기) starts at 17,000₩ for 450g of pork (갈매기살) but the unlimited steamed egg (계란찜, gyeran jjim) makes me so happy. The garlic marinated pork is the best here.

Sorae (서래) used to be my favorite pork barbecue (갈매기살) restaurant, but I think I like Galmaegi Meokjjang (갈매기먹짱) more these days. They line the grill with cheese on one side and scrambled eggs on the other. You have to order at least three servings, which start at 4,500₩ a serving, so it’s still really cheap and tasty.

Palsaik (팔색삼겹살) is a popular chain restaurant in Korea. I recommend getting the 8-color set for 30,000₩ so you can share 8-types of marinated pork with your friend(s).

Jjim dalk (찜닭) literally means “steamed chicken,” but it’s kind of misleading as the chicken is broiled rather than steamed. I’ve been told it’s a food to eat while drinking, but I like eating it all the time, drink or not.

One of my favorite places to eat this is at Du Namja (두남자 찜닭, Two Males). Their slogan is: “We are confident that we are #1.” I think they just might be. Prices range from 16,000-24,000₩ +3,000₩ for cheese and you know I gotta have that cheese!

One of my favorite Korean foods is kimchi jjigae (김치찌개, kimchi stew). Once you have all the ingredients, it’s easy to make.

Ingredients

  • 7 large dried anchovies, heads and guts removed
  • 1/3 cup Korean radish, thinly sliced
  • 4 x 5 inch dried kelp
  • 3 green onion roots
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 pound kimchi, cut into bite size pieces
  • ¼ cup kimchi brine
  • ½ pound pork shoulder or belly
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons gochugaru (Korean hot pepper flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (hot pepper paste)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 small package of tofu, sliced into ½ inch thick bite size pieces
  • 1 small package of spam, sliced into ½ inch thick bite size pieces
  • 3 green onions, diced

Best patbingsu (팥빙수) in Cheonan is on the 5th floor of Shinsegae at a cafe called 운보 찻집. It’s so simple, with toppings of only rice cake and honey, but I really enjoy it.

One of my favorite restaurants in Cheonan, South Korea is a hot tofu soup restaurant called LA 북창동순두부. I think it’s a chain that you can find in other cities, so if you see it elsewhere, you should check it out. The restaurant has the traditional Korean soup in different variations such as dumplings, curry, etc. for up to 8,000₩.

You can find this restaurant in downtown Cheonan, in the Yawoori area. There is a map on the Foursquare page.
