Candidly Kate: Feeling Seoul Unsettled

It’s been two and a half weeks since I boarded the KTX and moved my life up to Seoul from Busan.  To say that the transition was a bumpy ride would be an understatement, but I’ve had a lot of support from my parents, my friends back home and in Busan, as well as new friends and colleagues (not to mention superiors) who have helped in many ways (most notably cracking the whip on my landlord to fix my water as well as getting me a sweet new armoire).

Beyond Busan: Seoul Searching

I have been in Seoul nearly two weeks now and it feels like a year’s worth of events have taken place in the blink of an eye.  What is “sleep”?  What is “free time”?  In this video, you’ll see the progression from my suitcases exploding in my new apartment to a place that feels like home.  It feels like a dorm room, and while I’d much rather live in an environment I’ve decorated in a sophisticated manner, my biggest priority this year is using my 2 generous vacation periods to see the world.

How I got my first job in Korea

When was the last time you did something for the first time?  If it’s been so long that you can’t remember, I would consider that an issue.  In August of 2014 I found that I was asking myself that same question over and over again.  I took every possible opportunity to go try something new.  I took a card-sewing class (yes, you read that right), a brew-master’s tour, adult ballet (and barre) classes, did a scotch-tasting (okay, that one wasn’t quite so new), a Ukranian egg-decorating class (yep – wax, dip, and dye over and over again), and I dined in the dark at a restaurant where all the servers were blind.  We had scheduled axe-throwing and stand-up comedy classes, but ultimately I was just too busy with such an extremely demanding job.
