“Like, what should we do this weekend?”

As an English teacher in South Korea, when Thursday rolls around each week I usually itch for my upcoming weekend plans. I have learned to take full advantage of my weekend time in Korea and I hope to continue with this new approach to my free time when I return home. I love the tired yet accomplished feeling of a Sunday night following a jam-packed weekend of experiencing new things and people in Korea. When I find myself without plans midweek, I use the following 5 resources to find inspiration for weekend outings. I hope you find them helpful and please feel free to comment with alternative ideas. I promise, armed with these resources you won’t find yourself uttering the annoying answer to a friend looking to have a memorable weekend, “I don’t know, what do you want to do?”

Man of the Week: Seungri (승리)

Hungry for some man meat?

We've talked about some other members of Big Bang at TKQ (Taeyang and Top), but I absolutely love Big Bang so this man of the week is the youngest member, Seungri (승리). Look at those abs!

What made PSY Gangnam Style So Popular?

Just a few days back when I visited YouTube Top 100 Music section to catch my daily dose of music, I was surprised to see this new Korean music video out of nowhere at No. 2 putting Justin Bieber and Kate Perry behind. The video is Gangnam Style by KPOP singer PSY, also known as Park Jae-sang. And if you check it now its on NUMBER ONE, putting Carly Rae Jepsen’s video Call me may be at no. 2 slot.

The video is more of a dig at the kind of modern Korean women called Doenjangnyeo (soy bean paste women), who will live as frugally as possible on a cheap beanpaste stew so they can save up as much money as possible to spend on designer shoes and handbags, with Psy playing a clownish caricature of a Gangnam man. It’s also completely insane, hilarious, high-energy music videos.

So what makes this video so popular?

Oppa’s Gangnam Style 강남 스타일

Gangnam style is the newest single by Korean artist PSY 싸이, an upbeat and extremely catchy song about the Gangnam-style boy who is searching for his ideal Gangnam-style girl.  This sort of girl likes to be classy and sip coffee at an overpriced cup of coffee by day, but let her hair down party by night.

Lena Park "Parallax"

About a week ago, I got a call from a friend of mine offering me a ticket to see Lena Park's "Parallax" concert at Olympic Hall at Olympic Park in eastern Seoul. I jumped at the chance, not only because I was excited to see my friend perform as her guitarist and vocalist, but also because she's one of the most famous singers in Korea and in Asia.

Ok ok I admit it, I caught the K-Pop bug.

Go ahead, try and move to Korea and remain completely untouched by K-Pop. Good luck.

Korean Wave – Hallyu – getting popular in India

After reading the article today on Times of India – Korean Wave takes Indian Kids in its sway – suddenly reminded me of the day I was shooting for the Arirang Episode. I had asked my show director if she had visited India. And she told me that she had been to Nagaland to shoot a documentary as Korean Culture was very popular in that part of India. I had not paid much attention to her then, but then reading the article today kind of reinforced the fact that Korean Culture was definitely getting popular in India and it piqued my curiosity to find out more about this phenomenon.

마이티 마우스 ~나쁜놈! ♥ Mighty Mouth~ Bad Boy

I really enjoy the 2 man K-pop group “Mighty Mouth” they are a hip hop/pop group here in Korea that debuted in 2008 and have a very carefree and fun style! Even though they pose all super serious in lots of shots you can tell they are just a couple of goofy guys having fun ♥
