Gareth….the North American.

I feel the need to write a blog entry on two things; the fantastic weekend I have just had and the noticeable North American influence on my life.

I had an incredibly action packed weekend. I didn’t have any definite plans or anything that stood out as an exceptional event, but just some tentative plans based around the turbulent weather.

Busan's Other Beach - Gwangalli

For reasons that have never quite made sense to me, Busan is perhaps best known for the often crowded Haeundae Beach. Maybe being from a country where amazing beaches are a dime a dozen makes me something of a shore-front snob, but I've never really been that enamored of the unremarkable stretch of surf deprived beach surrounded by smoky Korean night clubs and more sleazy love motels than you can shake a stick at.

A Little Less of a Security Threat

Andy Jackson’s quip about Korean New Year’s Day (February 3) brings up an old joke I heard often at Camp Humphreys during both Korean New Year and Thanksgiving.

Forget civil defense drills, the true test of the South Korean government’s ability to handle a mass evacuation of its capital city is taking place this well in the form of the Lunar New Year’s Day.

The Wolfhound

Wolfhound Irish Bar, Haeundae

The new Wolfhound Bar opened in Busan last Saturday and already seems to be a hit with the local expats. We were at the opening night and it looks like the've done a pretty good job. A big long bar, everything is nice and new and clean (unlike some other expat bars I could mention....), and there's plenty of space and seating. No pool table or darts though.
