Things to Do in Korea

Food Shots: Bella Di Notte is Back

So the other night I got the hankering for some finely cooked Italian food. Now, this is hard to come by in Ulsan as there are many “Italian” restaurants or restaurants that serve “Italian” food but few actually make it properly. However, Bella Di Notte was not one of “those” restaurants and quickly gained a following here in Ulsan before it closed down last year. However, it is back now and closer to my place. I went there last night with my wife and got some shots to support an upcoming article for Ulsan Online.

At any rate, I love using my 50mm f/1.4 for food. Some is just something about the bokeh and the DOF that makes me love playing around with it. However, my wife hates it as she usually has to wait until I am finished shooting before she can eat. This was particularly painful last night as the food looked so amazing. Here are some of the shots that I got.

Busan Hobby Photographers Meet-up TODAY

If you are in Busan today there will be a meet-up at 4:30pm today to hike up Jangsan and get some shots of Gwangali bridge and cityscapes. The meet-up is put on by the facebook group “Korea’s Hobby Photographers” and I am happy that I will get to know them, later today. Here is the link to their facebook Event

Meeting location and time: 4:30 pm near Jangsan station at cafe Nudge. According to event organizer, Josh Beagle, it is on the corner between exits 11 and 13.

Ulsan’s Daeboreum Festival

Here are some shots from Ulsan’s festival held last Monday. It was a strange festival simply because it didn’t have that “huge celebration” feel to it like other years. Yes there was a stage with acrobats and the announcers mics were on full blast but I guess I wasn’t really in “the mood” or really feeling that creative. Perhaps I was a little burnt out from all the photo work that I have been doing lately but for whatever reason, to me, these photos are simply “meh”

Jeongwol Daeboreum Fire Festivals 2012

I must admit, I love these festivals. I guess that means that I am a bit of a fire-bug or something. At any rate, I love photographing them and I have tried to get out every year to catch people swirling fire and lighting a huge bonfire. The festivals are usually held during the first full moon of the lunar new year which is this Monday. These festivals are held pretty much all over Korea and in multiple places in each city. Don’t feel bad if you miss the big one on Jeju as there might just be one down the street at your local district office or community center.

How to Win Photo Contests in Korea

After reading a post about how to win photo contests, I decided to throw in my twenty won on how to do it in Korea. So this post won’t actually help you win anything but I thought that I would do a sort of write up about entering contests. I apologize if the title is a bit misleading. Basically, after judging the Korea Bridge Photo Contest I decided to write out my thoughts.

1. Read the Fine Print

Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk 2011

It is that time again! Time to get the photogs out and get some shots at Scott Kelby’s 2011 Worldwide Photo Walk! While I am still getting ready for this year’s photowalk which will be held in the Taehwa River Grand Park, I have a few questions for those who are interested in a day of photography and a great time.  Before I get to the questions, I guess I should explain what a “Worldwide Photo Walk” is.

Nampo-dong, Busan

One of my favorite places in Busan has to be Namp-dong. Not just for camera stores but just for the whole scene in general. In the last few years, I have seen major improvements in the area and it is quickly turning into the spot to go to in Busan. In my opinion, Nampo-dong has always been on the tourist map simply because of the Busan Tower, PIFF and near by Jagalchi Market, but recently they have started pulling in cafes and restaurants that complements the trendiness of the area but not take anything away from the history.

Korea Bridge Summer Photo Contest

Recently I had the opportunity to talk with Jeff Lebow of the Korea Bridge. Thus I am now helping out with the Korea Bridge Summer Photo Contest. Being a past winner myself (winter 2004… I think) I know how fun it is to participate in more of a local contest than those that I have featured recently. For me, winning the contest gave me a boost in confidence to further push my photography and I know that it will help you as well.

The contest is looking for photos from this Summer (2011) and there are two categories; Korea and outside of Korea. Why? well if you have travelled around and got some great summer of shots from Thailand for example but not much from Korea… well we’ve got you covered. The contest is open to anyone living in Korea, minus the judging panel and pro photographers. So that means pretty much anyone can enter.

Ulsan Inferno 2011

The Ulsan Inferno is once again on and it is taking place this weekend!! Why would the average reading of a photography blog like this care? Well… because I am sponsoring the “Best Photo” prize.

Basically the Inferno is a photo-based scavenger hunt where people ride around on motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles to capture photos of various sites around Ulsan in order to gain point and win cash prizes. It is an awesome time and I am super excited that we got it off the ground again this year.
