Korea and soju; the two are pretty intertwined. My dad likes to tell the story about how he once had a bad bottle of soju in South Korea. When I asked him why he thought that particular bottle was “bad,” he replied, “It was my third bottle in a row and it just tasted off. It made me sick.” Yeah, probably not the fact that it was his third bottle, right? Ha.

In 2014, Jinro soju was the largest selling alcohol in the world with sales of 71 million cases world wide. In 2015, they really brought the ruckus though with flavored soju.

Meet the Latest Hot Alcohol Drinks in South Korea

Perhaps, you know that South Korea is one of the heaviest drinking countries in the world. You will either witness or experience the wild drinking culture of Koreans for once during your stay. But, please let’s not over drink and pass out on the street! So the question is, what kind of alcohol do most Koreans drink? It’s ‘soju’, of course.

소주잔치

You just can’t imagine how much Koreans love soju. To help you get the picture, here’s the figure. An average Korean adult drinks 9.16 liters of alcohol each year, which is around 60 bottles of soju. And 1.5 million bottles are consumed in just a month. Unbelievable!

Top 5 Souvenirs You Should Buy in Korea

기념품1

What do you usually buy as souvenirs when you travel other countries? Small magnets? Cards? Or key chains? You may have had an experience of buying some souvenirs that only took a large portion of your suitcase and never looking at them again. So, Trazy recommends you the top 5 souvenirs from Korea that you won’t regret buying at all.

Work Hard, Play Harder

When it comes to countries with the best work-life balance, Korea is not exactly at the top of list. Compared to the international average of 1,765 hours, Koreans spend 2,090 hours at work per year; which amounts to approximately 8 additional 40-hour work weeks. They log long hours, and vacations are few and far between. As a result, less time is spent each day on activities devoted to personal health and well-being, family, and leisure.

That being said, when Koreans do finally get the chance to break away from their desks and let loose, they don’t hold back.  A typical night out with friends or co-workers often involves 5+ hours of non-stop food, merry conversation, and a grand finale of glorious singing, all of which is fluidly connected by an endless stream of alcohol. Think of it this way: if a bar crawl and an all-you-can-eat buffet had a baby and named it Karaoke, you’d have yourself a standard Korean night on the town.

Living Life The Korean Way

I’ve been living in Korea for 18 months now, enough time to get over the initial culture shock and to adapt to living the Korean lifestyle. There have been both good things- going out for dinner and getting a delicious, filling meal for under £5, and bad- fearing for your life every time you are on/ near the road because of the crazy drivers.

Here are some of the things I have become accustomed to during the last year and a half in  Korea- the good, the bad and everything in between…
