Best patbingsu (팥빙수) in Cheonan is on the 5th floor of Shinsegae at a cafe called 운보 찻집. It’s so simple, with toppings of only rice cake and honey, but I really enjoy it.

Bing Su! 빙수 Famous Korean Dessert!

Every season in Korea brings delicious treats specific to the weather. One of my favorite ways to cool off in the summer is to eat Bing su! Bing su is basically shaved ice with a topping, usually fruit. The “normal” bing su is Pat Bing Su, which is Red bean shaved ice! Red bean is used a lot in desserts in Korea, and I think it’s safe to say that most foreigners here are NOT the biggest fans of red bean. I can eat a little bit of it, but not usually the huge mound they pile on top of the shaved ice!

I prefer the variety of other toppings they offer, like mango, strawberry and sometimes green tea! With Koreans I’d say the most popular bing su is red bean and green tea, usually with dduk (rice cake) on top! My favorite bingsu I’ve had this summer was Cafe Pascucci’s berry banana bing su. Delicious!

Summer Eats and Treats

Temperatures have reached upwards of 36 degrees (that's 96 for you Americans) here in Seoul and many people are saying that this is the hottest summer they can remember in Korea. The heat and humidity have made the days quite miserable lately, forcing Seoulites indoors as the parasols and fans just won't cut it. I'm right there with them, especially since my old air conditioner doesn't do anything and I'm convinced that it's actually hotter in my room than it is outside. Despite the unpleasantness of it all, there are some seasonal Korean eats and treats that help to make the heat a bit more tolerable.

Patbingsu, a Summer Treat for Me and You!

Summer is coming, and so is that hot, hot heat. Sweeten the transition with this tasty summer treat.

Crave Alert: Patbingsu!

If the cruel sun has got you begging for something cold this summer, you’ll find that Patbingsu is the next best thing to another Ice Age. Patbingsu (sweet red beans with shaved ice) is a popular Korean dessert often topped with ice cream, fruits, and condensed milk. It truly is all the Summer flavors you love piled into a bowl. The symbiosis between the milky shaved ice and sweet beans is likely to slap a smile on any eater’s face.
