ZenKimchi Foodcast – Makgeolli, Korea’s Fizzy Brew

We are still playing catch-up here at MMPK headquarters, with a lot of new and exciting things in production.  A while back in May, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Joe McPherson, of ZenKimchi fame, for an episode of his Foodcast.  Of course the topic of the conversation was our beloved makgeolli, and despite chewing each other’s ears off for a good 40 minutes or so, I’m sure we could have gone on for much longer!  Every time I get chatting about makgeolli, Korean traditional liquor and the future of the industry, I realise just how much there is to know and how much more we have to learn.

Intro to Brewing Makgeolli Class April 19th!

Spring is in the air, and we have been in the Susubori lab brewing a lot recently.  There’s nothing better than having a cold, fresh batch of homemade makgeolli in the fridge to enjoy on a warm spring evening.  So it’s time to have another Intro to Brewing Makgeolli class to share the knowledge on how to make you own springtime brew!  As ever the class will be taught by our expat makgeolli experts Becca Baldwin and Dan Lenaghan, and you will be able to take  home your very own batch of makgeolli.   Here are the details:

Registration for March 22nd Meeting OPEN!!

We are not usually big fans of the flavored makgeolli out there, but it might just be because we haven’t found the right one!  Our next location has been featured on the popular Korean food TV show ‘Tasty Road’, and it is very well known for its blueberry makgeolli.  From the looks of the pictures, they are doing something special as it is very thick and frothy.  We expect the makgeolli to be on the sweeter, fruiter side of the palate this time around.

Asan Folk Festival 2013!!

This time of year is always a busy season for Makgeolli, and we are only now getting the time to collect ourselves and reflect on the past few months.  Back in October we had the annual Asan Folk Village Festival weekend.  MMPK teamed up with the always awesome Susubori Academy, along with their expat brewing instructors Becca Baldwin and Dan Lenaghan, to offer a weekend of open air makgeolli classes.

Muldwinda: Menu

Who Is Muldwinda?

Muldwinda is arguably the best makgeolli bar in all of Seoul.  They run in close partnership with Susubori Academy, which is the premier school for traditional alcohol brewing education.  Their knowledge of craft makgeolli and their commitment to nurturing the development of makgeolli culture is unparalleled, and you will be hard pressed to find a more relaxed and satisfying evening than at this bar.   It has a laid back & calming atmosphere, and their food reflects the same quality as their makgeolli.
