R16 Final Championship in Seoul

Wow, I can barely believe it's been almost 2 months since I said goodbye, to be quite honest; I've been blogging in my head for over 2 weeks, seems like every time I try to take a break from blogging, my brain explodes with Posts ideas lol.

I'm coming back because I finally did something more interesting than going out with friends (although a Bday celebration post will be coming soon!).

I was invited to the R16 Final Championship in Seoul, R16 Stands for Respect for the 16 countries that participate in it and is an annual international b-boy tournament and urban arts cultural festival sponsored mainly by the KTO and the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Festival was first held in 2007 in Seoul. The 2008 event took place in Suwon, 2009 was in Incheon and back in 2010 was brought back to Seoul.

Day 2 started early with a trip to the Togyo reservoir to watch geese and other migratory birds do what they do best… migrate. Sadly the weather was not on our side that day and a thick fog rolled in, obscuring our view of pretty much everything. It still was great to see this mysterious fog and the sounds of the birds flying overhead. Soon it was breakfast time and a bowl of jook and fresh locally grown food hit the spot. Many of the vegetables were grown on site which is something you don’t find too often in the cities.


KTO Chorwon Tour PT.1

Last weekend I was given the chance to be a part of a tour sponsored by the Korea Tourism Organization. We were asked to head up to Chorwon near the DMZ between North and South Korea to get photos of the area and it’s scenic sites. I was stoked to go! Mostly because I would get to spend an entire weekend with some of the best photographers in Korea. These are guys that I have been talking to online for years but rarely have had the chance to meet them and especially all at once. The guys that I am referring to are none other than Steve Miller, Simon Bond, and Douglas MacDonald. We were also joined by Busan’s best Keith Homan and Marc Potgieter, who are two awesome photographers.

On Korea tourism and promoting the country through foreigners

If this sounds like a repeat of this story (and post), it's not :)

While not precisely linked to the recently-ended VANK contest (and the wonderful prizes won by 100 bloggers about Korea), far more needs to be done to encourage tourism in Korea.

As you might have guessed from reading my blog, travel is a subject near and dear to me - and for obvious reasons tourism is part of that equation. This article from the Korea Times reminded me that tourism is a difficult nut to crack. One excerpt:
In the past, a seeming lack of grounded foreigner input has been a downfall in campaigns, according to an international studies professor at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
