Tour of the Gyeongsan Cobalt Mine - Site of Civilian Massacre - in Gyeongbuk
The Gyeongsan Cobalt Mine was created by the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period to extract cobalt for military use. It was closed after independence. During the Korean War, from July 1950 until August the following year, 3,500 innocent people suspected as potential North Korean sympathizers were killed at the mine. 60+ years later, the victims’ families and social movement continue the struggle to reveal the truth and bring to a close this historical tragedy.
